What should a driver check before departure?

Why is a pre-departure inspection critical?
A lashing strap is not a static element. As a result of vibration, temperature swings and the natural settling of cargo, strap tension changes over time. This is why EN 12195-1 and the German standard VDI 2700 recommend checking lashing not only before departure, but again after the first 50–80 km.
Consequently, an inspector who stops a truck 200 km after loading and finds slack straps does not record “wear during transit” — instead, they record “absence of monitoring.” That distinction matters: strap relaxation in itself is not a violation, but the failure to re-check is.
Driver lashing checklist: the 7 inspection points
Work through them in order. Each point takes one to two minutes.
Point 1 — Calculate total LC accounting for the lashing angle
Why it matters. This is violation number one across the EU. The total effective LC must cover at least 50% of the cargo mass forward and at least 25% laterally, and the effective value follows LC_eff = LC_nom × sin α. At 30° to the horizontal, therefore, the effective LC is only 50% of the nominal — so angle correction is not optional, and inspectors verify it on the spot. How to check:
- Read the LC value on each strap label (in daN or kg).
- Estimate each strap’s angle: below 30° is too shallow.
- Recalculate: LC_nom × sin(angle) × number of straps ≥ 50% of cargo mass.
- If the angle is below 45°, add straps or raise the lashing point.
Common mistake: summing nominal LC values without the angle correction. The figure looks sufficient on paper, but the real restraint is not — and inspectors carry angle gauges.
Point 2 — Visually inspect every strap
Why it matters. EN 12195-2 sets clear rejection criteria, and a strap with any listed defect must be replaced. Moreover, fines are issued per item — five bad straps means five separate fines.
How to check:
- Check the webbing for cuts and abrasion (depth over 10% of thickness = replace).
- Confirm the LC, STF and manufacturer markings are legible.
- Inspect hooks for deformation, cracks or an opened throat.
- Test the ratchet — it must operate smoothly, without jamming.
- Examine the stitching — thread separation in load-bearing areas = replace.

Point 3 — Confirm EN 12195-2 documentation is in the cab
Why it matters. In France, Germany and Austria especially, an inspector may request proof that the equipment conforms to EN 12195-2. Furthermore, batch documents left at the office are useless at a roadside check.
How to check:
- Print the Declaration of Conformity to EN 12195-2, or save the PDF to your phone.
- Verify it covers every strap model used on the journey.
- A TÜV SÜD test report, if available, adds further evidence.
- Store the documentation with the lashing equipment in the cab.
Common mistake: keeping the paperwork at the office. The inspector assesses only what is physically present at the inspection.
Point 4 — Verify the lashing method matches the cargo
Why it matters. EN 12195-1 distinguishes tie-down, loop, direct and blocking, and each suits specific cargo. Using the wrong one is a systemic violation and brings an automatic prohibition from continuing. If you are unsure which applies, review the 5 cargo securing methods.
How to check:
- Pallets, crates, heavy blocks — tie-down with anti-slip mats underneath.
- Pipes, coils, drums — direct or loop lashing plus blocking (chocks, wedges, cradles).
- Long cargo — direct lashing with several points along the length.
- Oversized cargo — a combination of methods; consult a lashing engineer first.
Common mistake: tie-down on pipes without blocking. A round cross-section has minimal floor contact, so friction alone is not enough, and the inspector records a violation immediately.
Point 5 — Check the anti-slip mats
Why it matters. Friction between cargo and floor is a key input to the restraint calculation. Without mats, timber on steel gives about μ = 0.3; with a mat it rises to 0.5 or more. As a result, mats directly change how many straps you need.
How to check:
- Mats laid between cargo and floor across the full contact area.
- Mats not wet, dirty or damaged (otherwise μ drops).
- Mats not shifted — still under the full bearing surface.
- For smooth surfaces (metal on metal), mats are mandatory.
Common mistake: mats under only part of the load, or missing. Without them the LC calculation does not balance — and the inspector sees it at once.
Point 6 — Inspect ratchets and buckles for corrosion
Why it matters. Corrosion weakens metal and jams the ratchet, and EN 12195-2 lists it among rejection criteria. A corroded ratchet equals a defective strap, which equals a fine.
How to check:
- Examine the ratchet for rust in the moving parts.
- Test the spring — it must return the handle to rest.
- Inspect hooks and D-rings for rust and deformation.
- If the ratchet works with difficulty, replace the strap — do not force it.
Common mistake: freeing a seized ratchet and carrying on. Difficult operation is wear that affects STF and reliability. The same inspection logic applies to eye bolts and turnbuckles.
Point 7 — Schedule a re-check stop at 50 km
Why it matters. VDI 2700 recommends re-checking strap tension after the first 50–80 km. In those early kilometres the cargo settles and straps can lose up to 25% of their tension, so without a re-check the tension may fall below the required level by mid-route.
How to check:
- Plan the first stop at 50 km — note it on the route sheet before departure.
- At the stop, re-tension every strap (two or three clicks is usually enough).
- Confirm the cargo has not shifted relative to the mats.
- Record the re-check in the journey log — your evidence of compliance.
Common mistake: scheduling the first stop at 200+ km to save time. An inspector at 150 km then finds slack straps and records a violation.

A checklist only works if it is used systematically. In practice, three steps do it:
- Print and place a copy in every cab. One laminated A4 sheet next to the route documents. Lamination costs €0.50; a fine costs up to €5,000.
- Build it into the dispatch procedure. The dispatcher or mechanic signs off completion in the journey documents — a legal safeguard that proves the inspection was carried out.

Is a printed driver lashing checklist legally required?
There is no formal requirement to carry a printed checklist. However, both VDI 2700 and EN 12195-1 mandate a pre-departure lashing inspection, and the checklist is simply the tool that ensures no point is missed. In legal proceedings, a completed checklist serves as evidence of due diligence.
Who is liable — the driver or the company?
Both. The driver is personally responsible for inspecting the lashing before departure, whereas the company must provide serviceable equipment and adequate training. Fines can be issued to both parties at once.
Do I need to complete the checklist in writing every journey?
It is not a legal obligation, but it is strongly recommended. A completed checklist is your legal defence: if an incident occurs, you can prove the inspection was performed. Many large EU carriers already require electronic completion as standard.
What should I do if I find a defect before departure?
Replace the defective item, and do not depart with non-compliant equipment — it is a safety risk, not just a fine risk. If no replacement is available, contact the dispatcher and delay departure. The cost of a delay is always lower than the cost of an incident.
