What are lashing chains and load binders?

Lashing chains are direct-lashing assemblies for heavy, high-inertia cargo — machinery, steel and construction equipment — manufactured and tested to EN 12195-3. Because each assembly combines a chain (typically grade 80 or grade 100), end fittings and a tensioning device, it carries a label stating its Lashing Capacity (LC) in daN. Unlike lifting chains, which are rated by Working Load Limit (WLL), lashing chains are rated by LC for securing forces. In addition, load binders — ratchet or lever type — apply and hold the pre-tension. Therefore, grade 100 chain provides a higher LC than grade 80 at the same size, which allows lighter assemblies for the same capacity.

What is the difference between LC and WLL? WLL rates a chain for lifting, whereas LC rates it for securing cargo to EN 12195-3. Therefore, a chain used for lashing must be marked with its LC.

Grade 80 or grade 100 lashing chain? Grade 100 offers a higher LC than grade 80 at the same link size, so it secures heavier loads with lighter chain. Moreover, both are valid to EN 12195-3.

What is a load binder? A load binder is the tensioning device — ratchet or lever type — that applies and holds the pre-tension in a lashing chain assembly.
