Do you know the cargo lashing rules?

The cargo lashing rules under EN 12195 come down to five things a BAG inspector checks: total effective LC with angle correction (at least 50% of cargo mass forward, 25% rearward and sideways), legible LC/STF markings on every strap, the correct lashing method for the cargo, EN 12195-2 documentation in the cab, and the condition of ratchets, buckles and hooks. An experienced driver, 15 years behind the wheel. Route Riga–Berlin, cargo secured “as always”. Stopped for a routine BAG inspection at the German border — and struggles with the second question. This is not unusual: according to Germany’s Bundesamt für Güterverkehr, a large share of lashing violations are recorded among drivers with years of experience. Not because they work carelessly, but because the rules tightened and training did not keep pace.

Why do experienced drivers make mistakes?

EN 12195 was last substantially revised in 2010–2011. Since then the requirements for LC calculation, lashing methods and documentation have tightened considerably. Drivers trained before those changes often work to outdated rules — and are unaware of it. In addition, there is the gap between what “works in practice” and what an inspector requires: the cargo arrived intact, so surely it was secured correctly. However, the inspector does not assess the outcome of the trip; they assess compliance with the calculated norms at the moment of departure.

Question 1 — Minimum total LC for a 4,200 kg load (forward)

The cargo weighs 4,200 kg. What is the minimum total LC required to restrain it in the forward direction under EN 12195-1?

  • A) At least 4,200 kg (100% of cargo mass)
  • B) At least 2,100 kg (50% of cargo mass) ✓
  • C) At least 1,260 kg (30% of cargo mass)
  • D) It depends on the cargo type — no single requirement

Correct: B — at least 2,100 kg (50% of cargo mass forward). EN 12195-1 sets minimum total LC by direction: forward at least 50%, rearward at least 25%, sideways at least 25%. So for 4,200 kg the forward minimum = 4,200 × 0.5 = 2,100 kg. That is the ideal-case minimum (direct lashing, best angle); with real lashing angles you need more. Question 2 — Effective force of a strap at 30°

A strap has a nominal LC of 2,500 kg. The lashing angle to the horizontal is 30°. What is its effective restraint force?

  • A) 2,500 kg — the angle has no effect
  • B) 2,165 kg — sin(30°) = 0.866
  • C) 1,250 kg — sin(30°) = 0.5 ✓
  • D) 750 kg — a 0.3 factor applies at low angles

Correct: C — 1,250 kg. Effective LC follows LC_eff = LC_nom × sin(α); at 30°, sin(30°) = 0.5, so a 2,500 kg strap holds only 1,250 kg — half its rating. This is the most common cause of fines across the EU: drivers add nominal LC correctly but skip the angle correction, and inspectors carry angle gauges. See how the angle changes the capacity. Question 3 — An intact strap with worn-off markings

The LC marking on a ratchet strap has worn away, but the webbing is intact — no cuts or tears. Is it still safe to use?

  • A) Yes — physical condition takes precedence
  • B) Yes — LC can be estimated from the webbing width
  • C) No — illegible marking means the strap is unfit ✓
  • D) Yes — if the driver knows the LC from memory

Correct: C — no, it is unfit. EN 12195-2 is explicit: a strap must be withdrawn from service once the marking is no longer legible, because the marking is how the inspector, driver and consignee verify its rated characteristics. An unreadable strap is treated as equipment of unknown capacity — fine €300–€2,500 per strap. The material and label colour matter too, as we explain in polypropylene vs polyester. Question 4 — Securing 300 mm steel pipes

You carry 300 mm steel pipes in a single row on a flat floor. What lashing method is correct under EN 12195-1?

  • A) Tie-down — the standard method for all cargo
  • B) Tie-down with anti-slip mats under the pipes
  • C) Direct or loop lashing with additional blocking ✓
  • D) No lashing if the pipes are packed tightly

Correct: C — direct or loop lashing with blocking. Cylindrical loads — pipes, coils, drums — have minimal floor contact, so friction-based tie-down alone is insufficient. EN 12195-1 requires direct or loop lashing plus blocking (chocks, wedges, cradles) to stop rolling. Tie-down on pipes without blocking is an automatic prohibition from continuing. Question 5 — What “EN 12195-2” on a strap means

What does the marking “EN 12195-2” on a ratchet strap mean?

  • A) It meets a European material-quality standard
  • B) It conforms to the European standard for webbing lashing straps and is tested to the prescribed methods ✓
  • C) It holds a TÜV certificate and is approved in Germany
  • D) It meets ISO requirements

Correct: B. EN 12195-2 is the standard “Load restraint assemblies on road vehicles, Part 2: webbing lashing straps of man-made fibres”. The marking is the manufacturer’s declaration of conformity across LC, STF, SHF, width, material and the strength of buckles and ratchets. Where can I find the full text of EN 12195?

EN 12195 can be bought through CEN (cen.eu) or a national standards body — for example latvianstandards.lv — with individual parts costing from about €60. For day-to-day compliance, the key requirements are covered across our blog, including the methods and LC calculation guides.

Do experienced drivers need to re-sit any assessment?

There is no formal requirement for periodic re-examination on EN 12195. However, given the 2010–2011 revisions and the tightening of enforcement from 2020, refreshing knowledge every two to three years is well justified. The angle correction in LC calculation is the change drivers overlook most often.

Are EN 12195 requirements the same in every EU country?

Yes. EN 12195 is a harmonised European standard and applies identically across all EU member states. What varies between countries is the fine amount and the intensity of enforcement — the technical lashing requirements themselves are uniform across the EU.

What is STF and why is it marked on the strap?

STF (Standard Tension Force) is the pre-tension the ratchet generates in normal use, and it drives the restraint in tie-down lashing. EN 12195-1 requires the STF to be at least 10% of the strap’s LC. Typical values are 250–500 kg for straps rated LC 1,000–2,500 kg.
