Eye-to-eye flat webbing slings (EE) - polyester rigging lifting slings are made with a flat loop eye on each end. The loop eye opens on the same plane as the sling body. These slings are made according to EU standard EN 1492-1. Please note: The lifting sling length can vary +/- 7 cm.
Effective working length (EWL) actual finished length of the flat woven webbing sling, inclusive of fittings, from bearing point to bearing point
Working load limit (WLL) maximum mass which the sewn webbing component of a flat woven webbing sling is designed to sustain in straight pull and which a sling or sling assembly is authorized to sustain in general lifting service.
This type of sling goes by a variety of names including flat eye & eye, eye & eye and double eye sling.
Usage of the slings
Eye-to-eye flat webbing slings are versatile and flexible. They are used for many rigging applications and with all three hitches: vertical, basket and choker.
The design includes a flat loop eye on each end. These polyester slings are often referred by many names, including eye and eye sling.
When discussing this type of synthetic flat web lifting sling, the term references the end loops on the sling itself. Two primary types of eyes exist, one flat and the other twisted.
Flat Eye – The flat eye sling is made from nylon and oriented using the same plane as the body of the sling. In addition to being highly versatile, the flat eye on lifting slings make for a “thinner” finished thickness and straps can more easily be removed from beneath a load with limited space clearance.
Twisted Eye – The twisted eye and flat eye are relatively the same with the exception that on the twisted eye, the nylon loops rotate at 90 degrees to the plane of the sling’s main body. This allows for a better choker hitch.
Advantages
Synthetic Flat Web slings are typically the preferred choice, although E/E slings are also available in wire rope. Its versatile design makes the synthetic web lifting sling so popular. The high strength to weight ratio makes synthetic web’s lightweight characteristic beneficial and easy to physically handle.
Straps made of synthetic webbing will not rust or corrode. They will not weaken with age when properly cared for and make visual inspections easier. Being so easy to physically bend, these synthetic lifting slings are easier to store, which reduces storage costs. Special order allows for different colors for easier identification and to reduce the risk of misuse. Some additional advantages include a tighter grip on cargo being moved, potentially reducing injuries to riggers and employees.
It is important to protect any synthetic slings from jagged or sharp edges. There are also limitations as far as temperature. Lifting slings and straps made from polyester cannot withstand temperatures greater than 100º C. However, there are ways to overcome these challenges. For instance, protective pads can be used for jagged or sharp edges and the slings can specially coated for great temperature resistance. Do not store in sunlight as ultraviolet rays will degrade the webbing.
